The Ragusan Republic was a maritime city-state that existed from 1358 to 1808 in what is now Dubrovnik, Croatia. It was founded after the fall of the Roman Empire and was based on a system of merchant capitalism, creating a wealthy oligarchic society. Ragusa was a trading hub with links to the Mediterranean, northern Europe, and Asia. During the Middle Ages, the Ragusan Republic played an important role in fostering trade relations between the Christian and Muslim worlds. It was also known for its advanced legal system, with the Codex Ragusanus adopted in 1272 as a source of civil law throughout the city-state. The Ragusan Republic survived numerous invasions and wars, but eventually fell to Napoleon's forces in 1808. Today, Dubrovnik, the former capital of the Ragusan Republic, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination.
